Sikshana Spoken English (offline) for Linux laptops - version 2026.11.03 ======================================================================= INSTALL OR UPDATE - one package does both SikshanaSpokenEnglish-Linux-2026.11.03.zip (2.2 GB). Close the app if it is open. Unzip the package, open the folder, right-click an empty space and choose Open in Terminal, type bash install.sh and press Enter. - On a new laptop, this installs the app. - On a laptop that already has the app, this updates it. Children's progress, the teacher PIN and the laptop's settings are kept. README.txt has more on starting, closing and removing the app. ABOUT THE AUDIO - please read The voices in the app are generated by open-source speech models and have not been fully checked yet. We will check them with your help on the online audio review page: choose the one voice to use everywhere, and mark each recording "Sounds right" or "Needs fixing". The page needs the internet. Type your name at the top; no sign-in is needed. Teacher > Recordings in the app links to it. We will record again everything you mark. Audio review page: https://sikshana-projects.pages.dev/audio-review/ WHAT IS NEW SINCE 2026.11.02-c - The audio review page is now public. Anyone with the link can open it on a computer or phone, type their name and start; no invitation or sign-in is needed. - Four Kannada recordings that were cut off have been recorded again: the "You helped me grow" line in Speak and Grow, two lesson lines, and page 10 of the story "I Can Help!". - Ready for automatic updates over the internet. Once they are switched on, a laptop that is online downloads each new version (only the files that changed, signed by A2Z so that nothing else is accepted) and installs it the next time the app opens, never during a lesson. If a new version fails to start, the laptop returns to the previous one. Children's progress, the teacher PIN and the laptop's settings are never touched. Updates are OFF in this version until the update service is ready; a later version will switch them on. Teacher > Check this laptop now has an "Updates" row. WHAT WAS NEW IN 2026.11.02-c (since 2026.11.02-b) - After each try, the app shows the whole sentence it heard ("You said: ..."). A word said wrongly, or a word that is not in the line, appears in red; a word that is nearly right appears in amber. - The screens fit the laptop screen, with no scrolling where everything can be shown at once. Ajji's six books sit in one row, each chapter of a book or place takes one line, the school map beside Meena is larger, progress pages show the topics side by side, Settings has two columns, and the result of a try fits under the line. - A calmer top bar in every design: Sikshana's logo and the design's name on the left, the tabs in the middle, and the points and the child's name on the right. Tap the name for Settings and help, Report a problem, Log out and Close. - Sikshana's logo and name appear on every screen of every design, including the sign-in screens. - The first-time tour shows all four designs together, each with a picture and one line about it, and the child chooses one. It no longer introduces the screens one by one. - Our school: one character per screen. Meena appears on the map, and each place shows only the person who belongs there. - Ajji's bookshelf: every book has its own cover, with three new covers (routines, questions, describing things). - The "Talk with Buddy" design is now called "Speak and Grow". For now, children practise talking through role-plays; a live conversation with Buddy will follow. "Talk with Buddy" is still the name of the chat. - Pictures appear faster: each design loads all of its pictures when it opens, and the browser keeps them. Pictures fade in, and the character beside an activity changes smoothly between listening, cheering and encouraging. - Teacher screen: a link to the online audio review page, at the top of Teacher and in Recordings. NOT CHECKED YET - please do not show these to children until they are checked - The audio (see above). - The Kannada text of the first-time tour and Settings, and the Kannada spoken guide, encouragement and sound tips in the trial designs. A native Kannada speaker needs to check them. Until then, children can set the helper voice to English only, or switch it off, in Settings (tap the name at the top right). TEST ON THE LAPTOP (ThinkPad T14s, Linux Mint) 1. Install with bash install.sh . Open the app from the desktop icon: it opens full screen, with no terminal window. 2. A child who has not seen the first-time tour yet sees it after signing in (Kannada first). Others can open it again from Settings. Go through it and choose a design. 3. In each design, check that these screens fit without scrolling: home, a book or place, an activity (after a try), games, and the progress page. Note any screen that still scrolls. 4. Do a sentence and say one word wrongly on purpose: "You said:" shows the sentence with that word in red. 5. Tap your name at the top right: Settings and help, Report a problem, Log out and Close should all work. 6. Teacher > Recordings: the audio review link opens (with the laptop online); Ctrl+W returns to the app. 7. Send one problem report with the laptop online, to check that it arrives. 8. Teacher > Check this laptop: the "Updates" row says that updates are off on this laptop (for now).
